Hey friends! I am so excited to share with you all this Halloween Dollar Tree DIY! Anyone who knows me will tell you that I love Halloween so of course one of my favorite movies is the 1988 classic Beetlejuice. Well, this fall the long awaited sequel is coming out in theaters so I thought what better way to celebrate than to create some Beetlejuice inspired Halloween decor! The best part is that you can get almost everything you need for this project at the Dollar Tree so it is very budget friendly! I absolutely love how this DIY Halloween tree turned out and I know you will too. So, grab your glue guns y’all because…..It’s Showtime!

Supplies
You can find all of the supplies listed below at Dollar Tree. I have also included links for alternative product options from Amazon in case you are unable to find them at your local Dollar Tree or if you do not have Dollar Tree in your area.
- 1 Dollar Tree (DT) Halloween Tree in black
- 6 pack of green and black spiders from DT
- 20 count mini string lights in purple from DT
- DT silver bows with skull (comes in a pack of 3)
- 2 DT black and white striped pumpkin picks
- Green deco mesh 6 inch
- Black deco mesh 6 inch
- Black pipe cleaners (can get at DT or any craft store)
- 4 silver glitter ribbon picks (I have a link below on how to make these)
- Black and white wired ribbon (the ribbon I used on this tree is from Hobby Lobby but any black and white striped or checked ribbon will work)
- Foral foam
- Tin can or other container of your choice to put your tree in
- White paint (I prefer chalk paint but acrylic works too)
- Black paint
- Mod Podge
- Paint brush
- Hot glue/ hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Wire cutters
Step 1
To start, take your Halloween tree out of the box and fluff it out. For now go ahead and add the plastic stand to the bottom while you decorate your tree.
Step 2
Next, open up your green and black deco mesh. Cut 7 green strips 12 inches long and 7 black strips 12 inches long. Then take 4 of your black pipe cleaners and cut them in half. You will need 7 of these total. After you have your mesh and pipe cleaners cut, take a piece of your cut black mesh and scrunch it together. Once scrunched, hold it pinched in the center. Do the same with the green mesh and put both colors together securing with a pipe cleaner. When you are done you should have a mesh bundle that looks like the picture below. Repeat this with the rest of your mesh. You should have 7 bundles of mesh when you are finished.
Once you have all of your bundles put together, it is time to add them to the tree. As I am sure you have noticed, these DT Halloween trees are a little sparse. These mesh bundles help fill it in and make it nice and full! On the bottom section of the tree, you will want to attach 3 of your bundles. The next section, attach 2 mesh bundles, and in the top section attach 2 mesh bundles as well (see pic below). To secure them to the tree, use the pipe cleaner tail that is on the mesh bundles and secure it around the tree’s center.
Once you have all your mesh bundles secured to the tree it should look like this.
Step 3
Now that we have the tree all filled in, lets add the topper. For this, I use one of the sliver bows from Dollar Tree, 4 sliver ribbon glitter picks, and 2 ten inch pieces of the black and white wired ribbon. The bows from Dollar Tree come in a 3 pack. We only need one for this project so stash the other two away for a later project! These bows also already come with a wire to attach them, so all you have to do is wire it to the top of the tree. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Now to add the glitter ribbon picks! These ribbon picks are super easy and fast to make. I use these a lot when I decorate trees, especially around Christmas time! You will see me use these more in future DIYs. Below is the link to my YouTube tutorial on how to make these. Don’t forget to like and subscribe so you don’t miss out on new DIY videos!
To finish this tree topper, you will take 2 of the ribbon picks you just made and 1 ten inch piece of black and white wired ribbon. The ribbon I am using is from Hobby Lobby. It was given to me by my awesome niece and bestie Ashley. She loves Beetlejuice as much as I do! One Halloween she dressed up as Beetlejuice and I was Lydia! I’ll add a picture of us at the bottom of the post! Anyways, if you can’t find this particular ribbon, no biggie. Any black and white stripped or check ribbon will do. Amazon even has some really cool ribbon that fits in perfect with the Beetlejuice theme! Here is a link if you want to check any out! Amazon Ribbon
Now, fold your ribbon in half so you know where the center is. Then take one of the ribbon picks and wrap the excess wire at the bottom around the center of the ribbon a couple times so that the ribbon is secured at the base of the pick. Then take your second ribbon pick and repeat. Don’t forget to dovetail the ends of your ribbon! It’s not a big deal but it gives the project a more finished look!
Once you have your ribbon/pick bundles put together, attach them to the tree at the base of the bow.
Step 4
Now we are ready to add some ribbon to the body of the tree! Take your black and white wired ribbon and cut 4 ten inch strips and dovetail the ends. Take 2 of your black pipe cleaners and cut them in half so you have 4. Fold your ribbon in half and wrap the pipe cleaner around the center. and twist the pipe cleaner to secure it. Then, wire the ribbon in the branches evenly around the tree. I placed two in the front and two in the back of the tree.
Step 5
Next, let’s add out striped pumpkin picks! Take 2 of the black and white striped pumpkin picks from DT and cut the pumpkins off the stems. Try and cut them as close to the main stem as possible so that you have a little wire left over to use to attach to the tree. Wire your pumpkins evenly around your tree. If you want, you can also add a dab of hot glue to make sure they are extra secure!
Step 6
Next we add the spiders!
Hot glue the spiders to the branches evenly around the tree. Be careful not to burn those fingers! Use finger protectors or a tool to push them down on the branch. I would like to say I took my own advice on that one….but I didn’t. Ouch! Don’t make my mistake!
Step 7
Now to make a base for this spooky tree! To keep with the Beetlejuice theme, I wanted a black and white striped base. I took a tin can and cut a piece of floral foam to fit and hot glued it in. Next, I took white chalk paint and painted the can. I used Waverly chalk paint in White and Ink for this project. I prefer chalk paint since it adheres very well to most surfaces and dries quickly. If you don’t have chalk paint then acrylic works great too. You can use whatever kind you have on hand. Once the white is dry, take a small paint brush and add vertical black stripes down the can. If you want to be precise you could use painters tape to tape off the stripes or you can just free hand them. like I did Whichever you are more comfortable with. Once it dried, I added a coat of Mod Podge to seal the paint and prevent chipping.
Once your can is dry, pull off the plastic stand on the bottom of the tree and insert it into the floral foam.
Here is what is looks like so far!
Step 8
We are almost done! The last thing we have to do is add the lights! I just grabbed a set of the 20 count mini purple light sets from Dollar Tree. They are the perfect size for this Halloween DIY! You could also use the battery operated purple fairy lights that Dollar Tree carries, instead.
And that is it! It’s all done!
I just love how this Halloween DIY turned out! Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts! I hope today’s project inspired you to go out and create your own!
